DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) should be made the gateway for Malaysian halal products expansion to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had discussions on the matter as he saw immense potential for local products to go global.
"I can see there is a demand for our products and at the same time, it is important for us to spread our wings further beyond the domestic market.
"More importantly, we do not just showcase halal products but we want to attract potential buyers," he said in wrapping up his inaugural seven-day working visit to the UAE.
Zahid had on Monday officiated Mihas@Dubai which features 215 Malaysian companies, held alongside Middle East Organic and Natural Product Expo.
Mihas, which stands for Malaysia International Halal Showcase, made its global debut in Dubai after 20 years.
With Zahid's visit, the bilateral ties between Malaysia and the UAE have strengthened, with both nations committing to forge mutually beneficial strategic partnerships.
He said his visits to various UAE companies and organisations have provided insights on fields such as satellite communication and artificial intelligence.
He said he learnt of the use of L-band satellite frequency and artificial intelligence that could aid in predicting and managing disaster risks; as well as the early involvement in technical and vocational education and training.
In 2026, Malaysia wants to be promoted as a tourist and honeymoon destination.
At Mihas@Dubai, Zahid witnessed three exchange of memorandum of understanding valued at RM16.2 million.
The MOU was between Majlis Amanah Raya's Gate to Global initiative and Hijrah Nature Herbs Sdn Bhd (RM12.336 million), Agym Nutrition Sdn Bhd (RM3 million) and ANH Smart Venture Sdn Bhd.(RM673,208).
Zahid said it proved that there is a huge potential for economic growth and international cooperation in the halal industry especially in empowering rural entrepreneurship.
