[UPDATED] Azalina to chair International Anti-Corruption Academy after Malaysia's historic UN vote

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said will chair the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision follows Malaysia securing the highest votes since the country's independence in the recent United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNICTRAL) election for the 2025-2031 term.

He also said the achievement reflects Malaysia's commitment to combating corruption, which is now gaining recognition on the global stage.

In the recent UNICTRAL election, Malaysia received the highest votes, 179 out of 183. This is a record that has never been achieved since we gained independence.

"As part of the IACA, which comprises 85 countries, this recognises the role played by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)," he said during Prime Minister's Question Time in Dewan Rakyat, today.

Anwar recently undertook official work visits to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Peru and Brazil from Nov 9 to 19 to strengthen strategic cooperation and generate significant investment potential for Malaysia.

During the trip, he led the Malaysian delegation to the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Week in Peru and the G20 Summit in Brazil.

Meanwhile, during the Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Anwar called on the international community to form a consensus to suspend or expel Israel from the United Nations.

The prime minister also brought Malaysia's stance in advocating for justice for Palestine and condemned Israel's atrocities on the world stage. He also stressed that Putrajaya has never diplomatically recognised Israel's existence as a state.
