KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed no objections to expediting the Political Financing Bill.
"The bill is still under review by the parliamentary committee. If expedited, I have no objections," Anwar said in response to a question from Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) during a Dewan Rakyat session today.
He said that while the cabinet had agreed to prioritise the bill, key details must first be addressed.
"The cabinet has agreed it should be expedited, but the parameters for its introduction and implementation must be discussed by the parliamentary committee," he added.
In March, the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said that the bill was being studied by the Human Rights, Elections, and Institutional Reforms special select committee of the Dewan Rakyat.
Currently, political funding matters are regulated under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
