KUALA LUMPUR: Asean member states have agreed to adopt guidelines for Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) to support sustainable transport in the region.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the policy will cover electric scooters, bikes and small cars, as part of Asean's main focus on sustainability.
"The guidelines outline standards and best practices for integrating LEVs into transport systems, addressing environmental concerns by reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the use of sustainable energy in transportation," he told a press conference.
The LEV guidelines were one of the outcomes agreed upon during the 30th Asean Transport Ministers Meeting and the 58th Senior Transport Officials Meeting.
Loke said the meeting also agreed on increasing the member states' maritime connectivity and integration with one another through digitalisation. This initiative will enable ports to share information and improve competitiveness.
Meanwhile, he highlighted Malaysia's pivotal role in driving Asean's integration, particularly economic integration, to establish a powerful global bloc.
Loke called on Asean countries to increase inter-regional trade and reduce the red tape in the integration processes.
"It is a win-win for everyone, it benefits the region as a whole," he said.
