Police collect RM1.03mil in traffic fines at 2TM programme

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have so far collected RM1.03 million in traffic fines, following the 60 per cent discount offered during the Madani government's second-anniversary (2TM) programme.

Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said nearly 3,000 people visited the booth, and 11,620 traffic fines had been settled as of 3pm.

"A total of 25 counters have been set up for the public to check traffic fines and make payments, including seven counters for people with disabilities, senior citizens and pregnant women.

"Additionally, 21 e-payment machines and 520 seats have been provided for the public to wait (in line to pay fines)," he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.

He said the move is aimed at reducing the burden on the public, encouraging them to promptly settle their fines to avoid legal actions such as arrest warrants or other penalties.

This is to prevent them from being blacklisted, which could prevent them from renewing road tax, licences and other related services, he said.

However, he said, the campaign would not be extended and will only run this Sunday.

"I urge the public to come as soon as possible.

"Today, we have already had a large turnout and I expect that tomorrow, being a weekend, the crowd will be even larger... to double tomorrow, potentially reaching over 6,000 people," he said.

Meanwhile, Yusri said police are planning to expand the discount campaign to police stations nationwide in mid-December.

"We are using the two-year Madani government programme as a benchmark and launching point for a national roll-out in the future."
