KOTA BARU: Syndicates operating along the Kelantan-Thai border may use schoolchildren to smuggle drugs into the country, said police.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said drug syndicates may use students to carry the drugs when they cross Sungai Golok via the many illegal jetties in the state.
He said police have not yet checked students' bags.
He said police will step up enforcement on illegal border crossings effective Dec 1.
"Policemen manning the border, including those from the General Operations Force, will inspect those using the illegal jetties.
"We will also check students using these jetties."
Regarding personnel to man the border, Yusoff said two General Operations Force units comprising Orang Asli will be deployed to Kelantan.
