Pregnant woman rescued by boat from flooded Kapit longhouse [WATCH]

KUCHING: A boat owned by villagers was used by the Fire and Rescue Department to evacuate a heavily pregnant woman from her home at Engkeng Longhouse, Sungai Amang, Kapit, which was flooded today.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Henderi Ardimansyah said they initially contacted Kapit Hospital's Emergency Department for assistance in transporting the 26-year-old woman.

He said firefighters had to use the boat to transport the woman to the main road, as she was in labour.

"Another woman and a man were also evacuated from the longhouse," he said.

He added that the woman gave birth to a baby girl shortly after arriving at Kapit Hospital.

He said: "The area around the longhouse was submerged in 3m of water.

"Firefighters had to use ropes to cross an iron bridge to reach the longhouse."
