Kedah floods: Rescuers brave swift currents to save semi-paralysed woman

SIK: Fire and Rescue Department personnel had to wade through swift currents up to two metres deep to rescue a partially paralysed elderly woman in Kampung Relung, Kuala Beris, earlier today.

Sik Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, who led the nine-men rescue team, said

the woman was trapped after her house was inundated at 1.30pm.

"We received a distress call from the victim's daughter, who was waiting by the roadside in tears, pleading for help as access routes had been cut off.

"The daughter was determined to evacuate her mother as the water levels continued to rise.

"We used a raft and placed the victim inside a PVC water storage tank, which was manoeuvred by five personnel, with the help of local residents," he said when contacted today.

The 20-minute rescue operation was successful, and the woman was handed over to her family.

He added that the flood situation in the Sik district remains under control, but water levels are on the rise.

Other affected settlements include Kampung Kota Aur, Kampung Relung, Kampung Baru Nami, Kampung Charuk Pisang, and Kampung Kuala Krik.

"The flooding in this district is due to continuous heavy rain, which has caused Sungai Muda and Gubir Dam to overflow," he said.
