KUALA LUMPUR: Flood aftermath. A Sukhoi Su-30MKM of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) surveys the damage caused by the floods in the northern state of Kedah.
This dramatic footage, captured by the Weapons Systems Officer (WSO), or 'Whizzo,' from the back seat of the Flanker at an altitude of about 500 feet, shows the extent of the damage to the RMAF airbase in Alor Setar. The Flanker belongs to No. 12 Squadron, based in Gong Kedak.
RMAF Alor Setar is home to the RMAF's Flying Institute (Inspen 1 and 2). Inspen 1 is the flight school for fixed-wing aircraft, while Inspen 2 is for rotary-wing aircraft.
In the footage, several of Inspen 1's Pilatus PC-7 Mk IIs can be seen parked under a shelter. Flight operations have been suspended until further notice, and it is reported that several of the PC-7s have been redeployed to RMAF Butterworth to escape the rising floodwaters.
Several northern and East Coast Malaysian states have been hit by floods caused by torrential rain over the past several weeks, resulting in significant damage and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.
