[UPDATED] Over 500 SPM candidates relocated to safety amid Kelantan floods

PUTRAJAYA: More than 500 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates in Kelantan have been relocated to dormitories following the ongoing floods.

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad confirmed that the department assisted the Education Ministry in moving 502 candidates to various dormitories over the past two days.

"Our personnel also assisted 22 teachers today in accessing a vault where the examination papers were being securely stored," he told reporters at the Fire and Rescue Department Headquarters today.

He said that between Nov 5 and Dec 1, a total of 7,632 personnel were deployed for various flood operations across the nine affected states.

"On average, we have 824 personnel on duty daily in these flooded areas.

"Our teams have handled 2,510 flood monitoring cases, carried out 653 evacuations, and participated in 4,978 rescue operations," he added.

Nor Hisham also said that they had a fleet of 450 marine assets, 350 lorries, vans, and four-wheel-drive trucks.

"The 10 Fast Response Teams that were deployed to Kelantan have begun returning to headquarters. However, we have decided to leave the trucks there to continue supporting ongoing operations," he said.
