KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is gearing up for a major terminal expansion project at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as part of its long-term resolution plan, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
The project, based on the KLIA 2020 Masterplan, includes proposals to expand the capacity of KLIA Terminal 1 from 30 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 59 mppa, and KLIA Terminal 2 from 45 mppa to 67 mppa.
"This also involves considering a fourth runway and a new Terminal 3 in the future," said Loke in a written Parliamentary reply yesterday.
Under this plan, the current combined capacity of KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which stands at 75 mppa, could be increased to 140 mppa.
"Aircraft movements could also rise from 108 per hour to 154 per hour through phased upgrade projects," he added.
MAHB is also proposing a Private Premium Terminal (PPT), catering to passengers seeking exclusive, high-end services.
"This paid terminal will have immigration and customs facilities and accommodate up to 100 users at a time. It is expected to begin construction in 2025," said Loke.
Additionally, a dedicated Hajj and Umrah Terminal with a capacity of 5 mppa is in the pipeline.
"This terminal will enable Saudi Arabian Government immigration checks to be conducted at KLIA (pre-clearance), saving passengers time, particularly at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah," he said.
However, Loke stressed that the development of the Hajj and Umrah Terminal depends on the Saudi Government's approval to provide the pre-clearance facility.
