KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has dismissed claims suggesting that he may step down as the Selangor Menteri Besar before the end of his term.
In a speech at the state-level Christmas celebration on Saturday night, Amirudin said when he took the oath of office, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah advised him to continue to serve as the menteri besar until the end of his term.
"Among the Sultan's advice was to ensure that I carry out my duties until they are completed (end of his term) and guarantee political stability in the country and the state."
Amirudin also assured that he would continue to govern the state and would prioritise stability, as promised during his oath of office.
"Recently, there have been various speculations about potential (leadership) changes, which could unsettle the people and disrupt the stability of the state.
"However, as I mentioned when I took my oath of office, stability (in Selangor) is my top priority. I have received His Royal Highness's consent to share this advice publicly. I will remain in Selangor until the end of my term to ensure both economic stability and the continued success of the Selangor state unity government.
"In reality, nothing is happening in Selangor to justify these speculations. They are being made because some know that through stability, our achievements and progress could be disrupted, and the people's focus could be shifted," he said.
His comments came in the wake of rumours that Umno Supreme Council member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz would leave Umno and join PKR, and later assume the Selangor Menteri Besar post.
