Social media user faces probe over alleged slander of king, PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a social media user who allegedly slandered His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he was informed of the matter by the MCMC and he would let the authorities carry out the investigation.

"I take note that the individual in question has apologised. I hope this serves as a lesson for him not to accuse or slander without basis, as this involves two significant institutions, namely the king and the prime minister.

"Therefore, if the authorities wish to take any action, I leave it to them. However, we are monitoring the situation, and if there are complaints from the public, MCMC will take action," Fahmi said after recording the Edisi Khas Podcast at Balai Berita Bangsar.

He added that social media users need to be moderate in sharing comments through platforms as there was a concern that it could lead to slander.

"I remind everyone to be cautious and moderate in making comments, as the concern is that such comments might violate the law.

"We do not want a situation where what is shared is not based on facts and could cause harm," Fahmi said.

Recently, a TikTok user went viral for claiming that the king and the prime minister were having lunch at a non-halal restaurant.

However, the video has since been taken down, and the user has also issued an apology for the mistake.
