PUTRAJAYA: The transition of government vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) will take place in stages, starting next year, says Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
He said the transition, currently under consideration by the Finance Ministry (MoF), would be finalised soon.
"The transition will not happen all at once but will occur in stages. However, the process has already begun and will be finalised shortly," he said during a press conference following the handover of guidelines for the transition to EVs today.
When asked whether the transition would apply to all government levels or specific departments, Nik Nazmi said that it would depend on the requirements of each department and be subject to the MoF's decision.
"It depends on the needs, and there are several aspects in the guidelines that must be considered. These requirements will determine whether local EVs or other brands can meet the transition needs," he said.
He added that the guidelines would serve as a technical reference for all ministries, departments, and government agencies.
"It outlines a structured strategy for transitioning official vehicles to EVs, covering planning, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation.
"Various strategies and initiatives are also being implemented by the government as part of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030," said Nik Nazmi.
