TAWAU: A 10-year-old boy was found with injuries, including a bruise on his forehead, cuts on his chin, bruises on his buttocks, and a blood clot behind his left ear, suspected to be the result of abuse by his aunt.
The abuse was discovered when the boy was brought to the Tawau Hospital Emergency Department on Dec 10 by his teacher.
The examining doctor filed a police report after noticing the suspicious injuries.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin confirmed the incident and said that investigations were ongoing.
He said that the doctor alerted the police after examining the boy at 3pm and noticing signs of abuse.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the boy, an only child, had been living with his aunt since his mother's death three years ago and is a student at a local religious school.
"The suspect was arrested but later released on police bail while further investigations continue.
"A case has been opened under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001," said Jasmin.
He also confirmed that the boy was receiving further medical treatment at Tawau Hospital.
