Police call in mother of 10-year-old who drove parents' car

SEREMBAN: The mother of a 10-year-old boy who caused an accident when he drove his parents' car near Taman Arowana Impian here on Tuesday (Sept 3) night has been called in for questioning.

Seremban district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said that at the time of the incident, which was around 9.30pm, the child's parents were not at home.

"We called the mother yesterday (Sept 4) to take her statement regarding the incident. The father has not been called yet as he is reportedly in poor health.

"We will conduct an investigation based on the statements, and it is possible that the couple, who are in their 40s, may be remanded.

"However, it depends on the court's discretion; the father may not be detained due to health reasons. It is up to the magistrate," he said when contacted today (Sept 5).

He explained that the child's father is a trader and the mother frequently travels to take the father to the hospital due to health issues.

"The investigation is conducted under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001. At the time of the incident, the parents were not at home and had left the car keys behind.

"It is hoped that this incident will serve as a lesson to other parents to monitor their children's activities, as it is understood that the child had driven the car once before this incident," he said.

It was reported yesterday that the 10-year-old boy had driven a car with a nine-year-old neighbour as a passenger. Upon reaching a bend, the car skidded and collided with a van, causing the van to slide forward and crash into another car.

Both boys were unhurt in the accident.
