Resorts affected by oil spill in Port Dickson

PORT DICKSON: Resorts here have been affected following pollution and an oil spill at Sea View beach.

In the incident that occurred at 1.53pm yesterday, the authorities, including the Civil Defence Force, took action after receiving a public complaint.

State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives, and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman S. Veerapan said the oil was flowing into the sea due to a mechanical issue with a sump pit oil interceptor, which had not been properly maintained.

"This situation caused oil to flow into the emergency drainage system, leading to an oil spill," he said.

He said the Negri Sembilan Department of Environment (JASNS) had initiated a pump house operation to prevent the incident from recurring and to stop the flow of oil into the sea.

"I have been informed that JASNS will also monitor the location to manage any potential recurrence of the same situation," he said.

Veerapan called for all parties to work together to address this issue, which could threaten marine life.

"Strict action can be taken under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 if any party is found to have violated the set regulations," he said.
