False information on social media threatens peace and stability, says Sabah Deputy CM

PENAMPANG: The spread of false information on social media is detrimental to the peace and stability of the state, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan said.

He expressed concern over the prevalence of viral WhatsApp messages containing misinformation.

"These messages aim to damage relationships between leaders or between leaders and their teams, creating distrust among them.

"The intention is to undermine trust between individuals, leaders, and their staff, further worsening the situation," he told reporters after the Parti Bersatu Sabah-Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Sabah (STAR) Christmas celebration at Hongkod Koisaan here.

Present were PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam and other leaders from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's component parties.

As for the scheduled protest on Dec 31 to be staged by Suara Mahasiswa, Jeffrey expressed hope that the group would not be exploited by others for ulterior motives.

Jeffrey also highlighted the importance of addressing corruption, stating that it is a universal concern that must be eradicated for the betterment of any nation.

"Corruption is something we all aim to combat," he said. "I only hope it won't be misused for purposes without clear evidence."
