NIOSH: Use advanced monitoring tech to prevent heavy vehicle accidents

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has called for the implementation of advanced monitoring technology in heavy vehicles.

This came after an accident at Km204 of the North-South Expressway claimed seven lives.

In a statement today, NIOSH vice-chairman Manivanan Gowin said state-of-the-art technology, like tyre pressure monitoring systems and telematics, should be mandatory in all heavy vehicles to detect mechanical issues in real time.

"These technologies can provide early warnings of potential malfunctions that may pose a danger to lives.

"It is crucial to leverage these technology to enhance road safety."

He urged for regular maintenance and strict, zero-tolerance enforcement for heavy vehicles.

He said vehicles must undergo regular inspections at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) under strict supervision.

"The Road Transport Department must strengthen enforcement by imposing heavy penalties and taking strict action against heavy vehicles that fail to meet safety standards.

"Transport operators must implement comprehensive and ongoing safety training programmes, particularly for truck and bus drivers.

"These programmes should cover essential safe driving practices, an understanding of traffic laws and a commitment to strict safety principles.

"By enhancing awareness and discipline, we can significantly reduce accidents."

He called on government agencies, transport operators, local authorities and non-governmental organisations to collaborate in formulating a long-term strategic plan for road safety.

"This collaboration should include identifying issues, conducting continuous research and implementing more stringent and effective safety policies."

He said NIOSH had a team of highly skilled experts that could help authorities identify safety issues and develop more effective and sustainable solutions.

"This team is prepared to conduct technical analyses, investigate the root causes of accidents and recommend precise and appropriate improvements.

"NIOSH is dedicated to being a strategic partner with all stakeholders to ensure that road safety is maintained at the highest level.

"This tragedy should act as a pivotal moment for reforming approaches to heavy vehicle safety. There can be no compromise when it comes to human lives, and safety must always be the top priority."

On Monday night, an accident occurred at Km204 of the North-South Expressway near Alor Gajah, Melaka, involving a tour bus, two trailers, a multipurpose vehicle and a car.

The bus allegedly hit a tyre that had detached from a trailer. (

In total, the accident left seven dead and 33 injured, including passengers of the tour bus.
