Fisherman gets life sentence and caning for drug trafficking

MUAR: A fisherman was sentenced to life imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane by the High Court today after being found guilty of trafficking over a kilogramme of methamphetamine four years ago.

Judge Suria Kumar DJ Paul delivered the sentence to 41-year-old Md Iskandar Muhamad, ruling that the defence failed to raise any reasonable doubt in the case. In his ruling, Suria Kumar said the decision reflects the court's serious stance on drug abuse and trafficking.

"This is the court's decision here at the Muar High Court. You have the right to appeal at the Court of Appeal," he said before handing down the sentence.

The accused, a widower with one child, was charged with trafficking 1,471 grams of methamphetamine at Jalan Abd Rahman, heading toward Parit Jawa, at 5 am on June 6, 2020. Md Iskandar was charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty under Section 39B (2) of the same Act.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Sulehan Abd Rahman led the prosecution, while RK Bala represented the accused.

The court ruled that the life sentence and 30-year term would begin from the date the accused was arrested, June 6, 2020.
