Kelantan floods force SPM students to wade through waters to hostels

RANTAU PANJANG: Floods affecting several districts in Kelantan forced around 30 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students to wade through floodwaters to return to their hostels here today.

In addition to wading through 0.2m-deep floodwaters, some students also had to use boats to reach their homes.

This situation arose after their school hostels and homes were inundated by floodwaters when Sungai Golok overflowed and breached its banks yesterday.

Among those affected were Nurul Ain Syafikah Masrun and her two friends, Nor Aulia Maisarah Mazlan and Wan Aini Wae Hama, all aged 17.

The Form Five students of SMA Maahad Muhammadi Rantau Panjang said they arrived at the hostel around noon and were shocked to see the floodwaters.

"When we left the hostel around 7.30 am this morning, there was no floodwater, so we were really surprised to see the compound flooded when we returned.

"We are lucky that our hostel is on the third floor of a three-storey building.

"It's okay for us to wade through the 0.2m floodwaters as long as we're safe," said Nurul Ain.

SMK Rantau Panjang student Norliana Saiful Azwan said she had to use a boat to return to her home in Kampung Kubang Chenok.

"My house is surrounded by 1.2m of floodwaters, but we have yet to move to a flood relief centre as the situation is still under control.

"Floods will not stop me from going to school. I am prepared for the upcoming examination," the youngest of two siblings said.

Flood conditions in Kelantan slightly improved today, with only Sungai Golok remaining above its danger level, while other rivers have receded.

As of noon, Sungai Golok was recorded at 10.22m, which is 1.22m above its danger mark of 9m.

The overflow of the river resulted in many villages in low-lying areas being submerged by floodwaters.

The affected villages include Kampung Tersang, Kampung Lanchang, and Kampung Lubok Setol.
