KUALA LUMPUR: The claim that "Islam is under threat" will continue to be exploited by certain parties to gain support, says Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
The PKR vice-president referred to the political attacks on his two fellow ministers, Hannah Yeoh and Nga Kor Ming, who have recently been at the centre of political controversy.
"This time, the issue concerns Yeoh's book and Nga's celebration event.
"Some may perceive this as an attack on Islam. It is in reality nothing more than an outdated tactic employed to stir up emotions when political ideas are exhausted," he said in a post on X yesterday.
On the same day, Pas Youth and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia announced a joint rally in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Jan 3), claiming a sense of being "threatened" and intending to protest against Nga and Yeoh.
Yeoh faced criticism over her book, "Becoming Hannah", with some parties claiming it had religious and political implications.
As of Dec 28, at least seven reports had been lodged against Yeoh regarding the book, circulating since 2014.
Meanwhile, Nga's Christmas carol performance at the Housing and Local Government Ministry in Putrajaya was criticised because it involved Muslim employees.
In a video posted to Nga's Facebook account on Dec 24, ministry staff were seen singing "Jingle Bells", a song about the joy of riding in a sleigh through the snow, and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas".
Nga defended the event, stating that it reflected mutual respect and harmony among the ministry's employees.
