Popular Malaysian comedian serving 6-month jail term in Saudi over drug offence

KUALA LUMPUR: A popular Malaysian comedian, who was detained in Jeddah last October for a drug-related offence, is currently serving a six-month jail sentence in Saudi Arabia.

A source familiar with the case said the sentence was handed down to the comedian during his trial in Nov last year.

The source also said that the comedian might be released earlier than the stipulated period if he exhibits good behaviour while under detention.

"Based on the judgment, he is expected to complete his prison sentence by April," the source told Berita Harian today.

Previously, the Malaysian Embassy in Riyadh confirmed the detention of a Malaysian citizen in Jeddah for allegedly possessing cannabis.

However, it did not disclose the individual's identity.

Since his arrest, the Malaysian Embassy and the Consulate General in Jeddah have been providing consular assistance to the artiste.
