Elderly couple tie the knot after falling in love at retirement home

KUCHING: Two elderly residents of Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching who fell for each other because of their love of Bible knowledge and singing tied the knot today, the first for the retirement home this year.

The marriage of Richard Wong Huan Chang, 65, and Molly Teo Siok Khim, 80, was solemnised by Assistant Registrar of Marriage Lina Edu at the state National Registration Department.

Among those present were state Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, church members, officials from Rumah Seri Kenangan and their respective family members.

Speaking to reporters, Fatimah said the couple, who had each lost their previous spouses, decided to get married after developing a close relationship.

"Their marriage process was also facilitated by the National Registration Department and the church community.

"At Rumah Seri Kenangan, we believe that age is not an obstacle to finding happiness. The seniors also need companions to avoid loneliness and depression.

"This marriage proves the importance of relationships that provide emotional and spiritual support," she said.

Fatimah said Rumah Seri Kenangan has no problems if male and female residents want to get married.

She said the male and female residents, however, stay in different blocks.

She explained that Wong and Teo had met the conditions set by the institution, including the absence of mental illness or contagious diseases and having no heirs who could take care of them.

Their wedding was celebrated in a simple yet joyful manner, involving the residents of Rumah Seri Kenangan as well as members of the church community who provided moral and spiritual support.

In addition, Fatimah also stressed the importance of elements of similarity, such as religious background and hobbies, in ensuring a lasting relationship.

"The couple are both active in studying religious knowledge, which is an important foundation in their relationship.

"They also complement each other in daily activities, such as singing and sharing stories," she added.

The church community has bought a bed and other things for the happy couple while Rumah Sri Kenangan has prepared a room for them.
