GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno is in sync with the national party leadership in upholding the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong regarding the king's prerogative to grant pardons or postpone and reduce sentences.
State Umno secretary Datuk Dr Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah said the state party members had very high hopes that their former president Datuk Seri Najib Razak would receive mercy, kindness and forgiveness from the king.
"In any circumstances, Penang Umno is in line with the stance of the national party leadership in upholding the decree of the king.
"In this regard, Penang Umno is in agreement with the national party leadership to remain steadfast in upholding the principles of the Rukun Negara, including loyalty to the king and country.
"As such, it will proceed to postpone the mobilisation of party grassroots to the planned peaceful rally on Monday (Jan 6)," he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Umno decided to cancel its attendance at the "Solidarity with Datuk Seri Najib Razak" rally in response to the royal decree issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The party expressed its full respect for the prerogative of the king in granting pardons as outlined in the Federal Constitution.
The decision to cancel the rally underscored Umno's commitment to the rule of law and its loyalty to the constitutional monarchy system, said its secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
"To Allah, we surrender everything. And to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, we convey this great hope," Shah Headan added.
