KUALA LUMPUR: MCA will not mobilise its party members to attend a solidarity rally for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Jan 6.
In a statement, the Barisan Nasional component party, however, clarified that it would not prevent members from attending in their personal capacity.
The MCA said it acknowledged the official statement issued by Istana Negara yesterday and reiterated its stance on respecting the Federal Constitution.
This includes the prerogative powers of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under Articles 42(1) and (2) to grant pardons, reprieves, and commutations of sentences for any offences committed within the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya.
"Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, as the organiser, issued a media statement announcing that Umno would not proceed with the solidarity gathering for Najib at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on Jan 6.
"This decision was made following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, as conveyed through an official statement by the police.
"The MCA is closely monitoring these developments.
"In light of these latest developments, the MCA has decided not to mobilise party members to attend the gathering.
"However, the MCA will not prevent individuals from attending in their personal capacity," the statement said.
The MCA also reiterated its consistent stance on the issue of the royal addendum for Najib's house detention, calling for government transparency on whether such an addendum existed during the tenure of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"The government must uphold and honour all directives from His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at all times in accordance with the Federal Constitution," it added.
