[UPDATED] PM Anwar, Japanese counterpart to discuss 'critical' energy plan

KUALA LUMPUR: A "critical" energy transition plan will be among the key topics discussed tomorrow between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

"Tomorrow, the Japanese prime minister will arrive in Malaysia, and we will discuss several key issues, including trade and investment.

"A major focus will be on a new and critical energy transition plan involving the Sarawak Premier, Petros, and collaboration with Petronas.

"We hope, these talks could establish Malaysia, especially Sarawak, as a regional energy hub," he said in his speech at the Forum Ekonomi Malaysia 2025 here today.

Ishiba is scheduled to visit Malaysia and Indonesia from Jan 9 to 12 to deepen cooperation with the Southeast Asian nations toward realising a rules-based, free and open Indo-Pacific.

During Anwar's working visit to Japan last May, Malaysia secured RM1.45 billion in potential investments and RM550 million in potential exports from meetings with Japanese companies.

Some companies also expressed their intention to commit to new investments, particularly in new and renewable energies in Sabah and Sarawak.
