Chicken slices used in product halal-certified - Sandwich supplier

KUALA LUMPUR: A pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwich supplier has confirmed that the chicken used in their product is halal-certified.

In a statement aired on Buletin TV3 tonight, the supplier stated that the sandwich ingredients including bread, cheese, and halal-certified chicken slices, had certification from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

"Shake and Bake confirms that the chicken ham used in its sandwiches is halal-certified by Jakim," the statement from Shake and Bake Café' read.

It also revealed that on Jan 10, officers from the Federal Territories Domestic Trade and Cost of Living ministry and Jakim officers had visited their factory, which is now under investigation.

In the statement, the company also pledged to give full cooperation to authorities investigating the case.

The statement comes after convenience store chain KK Mart suspended all business dealings with the supplier due to concerns regarding the product's halal status.

Earlier, Jakim had clarified that the sandwiches and the company producing them were not halal certified and the certificate had expired last year.
