KUALA LUMPUR: The move to enforce stricter proceedings in the Dewan Rakyat, aimed at ensuring more disciplined and efficient debates, has received support from lawmakers across the political divide.
They believe the decision spearheaded by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul could foster more mature discussions among members of parliament.
Earlier today, Johari said the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament, which begins on Monday, would be conducted more strictly, with no tolerance for political manoeuvring.
He expressed confidence that all MPs would demonstrate professionalism and maturity in discussing public issues.
Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung welcomed the move, saying it could enhance parliamentary efficiency.
"I agree with the decision. It is better to save time and make the process more efficient for all 222 members to deliberate in the august house," the government backbencher told the New Straits Times.
Opposition MP Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also supported the move, but stressed that the speaker must act fairly towards all members of the house.
He said while heated debates were common in any parliament, most discussions in the Dewan Rakyat reflected the maturity and professionalism of its members.
"Good, substantive and factual debates are the best approach. However, they are often disrupted by trivial matters or hidden behind points of order," said Tuan Ibrahim.
"MPs have different debating styles. We do not want the House to become rigid and dull. MPs are not schoolchildren who do not understand the rules. Many are senior members, former ministers, ex-senior officers and key political leaders.
"Firmness is necessary, but fairness in managing debates is even more important. The speaker must conduct the proceedings fairly and equitably, based on House rules. They must remain calm, impartial, and in control."
Tuan Ibrahim said Parliament is a noble institution for discussing policies, drafting laws, and addressing national issues.
