KUALA LUMPUR: A family residing on the 12th floor of a Jalan Loke Yew flat experienced a terrifying incident when their living room wall was torn apart by strong winds during a thunderstorm and heavy rainfall yesterday evening.
A photograph of the exposed living room, with the wooden wall blown away, was shared on Twitter by user @rvzlee.
The tweet quickly gained traction, amassing over 3,500 shares and stirring various reactions among social media users.
Videos of the incident were shared on TikTok, garnering over 1.5 million views as of 10am today.
The incident not only shocked netizens but also prompted calls for refurbishment efforts to be initiated at the flat.
Reports indicate that the Loke Yew flat, constructed in 1968, had wooden walls, which proved vulnerable to the strong winds.
The aged wooden structure succumbed to the intense gusts, resulting in its disintegration during the severe weather event.
Concerns were raised by Twitter user @Jaaaamey, who highlighted the deteriorated state of the residents' walls, emphasising the urgency of replacing the old and loose timber walls.
"PA (public housing in) Loke Yew was built in 1968, while PA near Hang Tuah station was built in 1969.
"So it is true that most of the walls of the residents' houses are dilapidated. The timber (wooden) walls are already old, loose and just waiting to be replaced," @Jaaaamey wrote.
The safety of people residing in the affected flat was also a concern.
"Built in 1968? That's a long time (ago). This is extremely dangerous for those who live in it and dangerous for those who (walk) pass or under it," Twitter user @inderasakti_kl wrote.
