KUALA LUMPUR: A TikTok video by a lawyer in which he recounts his experience assisting a woman who was caught stealing a RM18 pencil box for her son who excelled in school has gone viral.
The heartrending story was told by TikTok user Amzaharil, who lists himself as a criminal lawyer on the platform.
In his video, Amzaharil recounts that the story began when a woman stole a box of pencils to give as a gift to her child, who had achieved first place in school.
Committed to fulfilling her promise to her child, she resorted to stealing the RM18 box of pencils from a supermarket.
"It was a complete pencil box with a sharpener, nice " recalled Amzaharil.
Subsequently, she was apprehended and brought to court.
Amzaharil checked on the case, and went to her child's school.
"I met the headmaster, and he took out his report card, which confirmed that the child was first in his class," he said.
Out of kindness, the lawyer decided to take on her case pro bono.
Amzaharil said that years passed, when he was approached by a man who observed him intently.
To his surprise, the man turned out to be the son of the woman he had helped, and he had become a successful lawyer as well.
He added that the incident, which occurred in 1998 was the most memorable incident that occured in his 31 years as a lawyer.
Since being uploaded, the post has been liked by 71.8k and shared 9,500 times by TikTok users.
