JOHOR BARU: A 46-second video depicting a kitten with its forelegs tied and dropped head-first went viral yesterday, drawing widespread condemnation.
The footage shows the orange-furred kitten being dropped from about a meter onto a concrete floor multiple times.
Johor Baru (North) police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh confirmed the incident occurred in December last year.
"A police report was lodged by the state Veterinary Department, which took appropriate action against the culprit and took the cat into its care," he said when contacted today.
He said investigations revealed that the abuse took place at Jalan Kejayaan 43, Taman Universiti in Skudai on Dec 4 last year and was investigated under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for cruelty against animals.
Under the act, any form of cruelty against animals which includes abuse, unnecessary pain, suffering, or keeping the animals chained or tethered using a short or heavy chain and animal abandonment, is punishable with a minimum RM20,000 fine or three-year-imprisonment or both.
