KUALA LUMPUR: The brother of national track cyclist Shah Firdaus Sahrom has requested the public to refrain from attacking Japanese rider Shinji Nakano on social media.
Earlier this morning, Shah Firdaus' dream of a medal was almost within reach as he was in third place with about 25 metres left in the race.
However, it was quickly shattered when he was hit by Nakano, causing him and Jack Carlin of Great Britain to crash.
Ridwan Sahrom, who is also a track cyclist, said accidents can occur regardless of intent and blame should not be assigned hastily.
He also advised the public to stay calm.
"Please remain calm and do not attack or comment anything bad on the Japanese rider's social media," he wrote on Instagram.

However, in the same posting, fans came out to express their dissatisfaction.
"Justice is needed. We could have bronze if it was not for the Japanese. We are just disappointed fans and we are passionate about our rider," said user @affiqshamil.
"At least, it needs some sort of justice to make it as fair as possible to us. Hope Shah is doing better," said @azy_0706
The fans in the comments keep on saying Shah Firdaus has been sabotaged and he deserved justice, as Malaysia could have won the bronze medal in the event if not for the crash.
