KUALA LUMPUR: A TikTok video of officers from the Melaka Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) confronting a foreign worker at a minimarket for selling cooking oil at inflated prices without a proper licence has earned widespread praise online.
The video, posted on KPDN Melaka's TikTok account, shows officers questioning the worker, who appeared anxious and even attempted to turn off the store's lights to evade scrutiny.
When asked about his connection to the minimarket, the worker claimed he was merely minding the shop while the owner was away.
However, his nervous demeanor raised suspicions, and officers revealed they had been monitoring the minimarket for selling cooking oil at RM3.50 per packet without the necessary licence.
In an odd twist, the worker initially denied the minimarket sold cooking oil, citing the lack of a licence, only to contradict himself shortly after.
When asked for his passport, he claimed his employer was holding it.
The officers called a number provided by the worker, but the person on the line failed to verify the owner's details.
The officers ultimately alerted the Immigration Department for further investigation into the worker's status.
The video has garnered over 6 million views and 294,100 likes, with netizens applauding the officers' commitment.
TikTok user @fr_kaizo2 expressed surprise, saying they thought the officers were joking about involving immigration, while @manhattan_n_ques admired their dedication, aspiring to emulate their proactive approach.
Many others called for similar action in their local areas, praising KPDN's vigilance in addressing consumer rights and legal compliance.
