KUALA LUMPUR: A video on social media has gone viral showing a group of teenagers being punished with squats by traffic police officers.
In the video, more than 20 male teenagers, believed to be underage, are seen performing the punishment while being observed by several traffic police officers.
The exact location of the incident is unclear, but it is believed to have taken place in the capital city, based on the background in the video.
The teenagers were allegedly detained for riding basikal lajak (modified bicycles), and a row of basikal lajak can be seen lined up behind them.
This rare situation also attracted the attention of nearby bystanders, who watched and recorded the moment.
In the comments section, most netizens supported the traffic police officers' actions, viewing the punishment as a lesson and describing it as 'cute punishment.'
An Instagram user, hj_hannahh, wrote in the comments section, "The police punishment is cute. It's better than fining them; they're just kids."
Ismaliza Ismail commented, "Ha, wandering around late at night. May they become good and successful in this world and the hereafter #butsoadorable."
"It's okay, kid, this is a memory. Make it something that will change you for the better," said Puan Maz.
"Hah, now you got it, and it's cute too," said Noor Erni Shakila Salim.
Meanwhile, Sidah Rosidah wrote, "The police are the best, just like a father to his child or a teacher to their students. May these young people always stay away from danger."
During the New Year's eve celebration in the capital city last night, the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) conducted operations and monitoring around the capital until early morning.
The operations were carried out to combat illegal racing, road bullies, and activities that violate the law.
