Police probe video of teens riding 'basikal lajak'

ALOR STAR: The police are investigating a video circulating on social media showing a group of teenagers dangerously riding modified bicycles known as 'basikal lajak' in the district.

The Kota Star district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad, said the video was obtained from the at 9:24 a.m. today.

She said the 20-second video showed a group of teenagers riding bicycles dangerously, causing one of them to lose control and fall onto the road.

"Initial investigations based on the video suggest that the incident occurred last Friday around 5.30pm.

"The video showed approximately eight teenagers riding what appears to be 'basikal lajak' racing each other while descending the Teluk Wanjah bridge, disregarding other road users."

"At present, the police have not received any complaints from any parties regarding the incident," she said in a statement today.

Siti Nor Salawati added that a police report had already been filed by the Kota Star Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division to facilitate an investigation.

She said the case would be investigated under Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which stipulates that if convicted, the offender may be fined RM300, or if it is a repeat offence, fined RM1,000 or imprisoned for up to three months.

"In this regard, the Kota Star police are requesting the public's cooperation. Anyone with information regarding the teenagers involved is urged to contact Inspector Ifzam Mohd Zaini at 012-4043373 or the Kota Star traffic police station at 04-7321222.

"Additionally, the police advise parents to monitor their children's activities, especially during school holidays, to prevent involvement in such unhealthy activities.

"This is because it not only poses a danger to themselves but also to other road users," she said.
