Pas wants to play kingmaker, targets 40 parliamentary seats

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas is banking on playing the kingmaker role in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14) by securing 40 parliamentary seats.

Its President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said he is confident the Islamic party will be able to win the seats needed, thus making other parties to depend on them in order to form a government.

He said this is because no parties in the country would be able to form a government at the federal level without having a minimum of 112 seats for a simple majority in the 222-seat Parliament.

“If Pas can win 40 parliamentary seats, other parties can’t form (a government) unless they rely on our winning seats.

“Although other parties have 100 seats or 80 seats, if they want to form a government, they still need to obtain the minimum of 112 seats.

“If Pas has 40 seats, it means those who want to form a government will be depending on us. With these 40 seats, Pas will have the influence and can make all sorts of demands,” Pas mouthpiece, Harakah Daily quoted Hadi as saying yesterday.

On Dec 31 last year, Hadi said Pas will contest for 130 parliamentary seats, and is eyeing 50 more seats where allied non-governmental organisations (NGOs) could represent the party in GE14.

In the previous GE13, the party won 22 parliamentary seats when it was part of the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat.
