MCA fielding more young candidates with potential in Pahang

KUANTAN: The Pahang MCA has carried out a massive transformation by fielding more young candidates with potential in the 14th General Election (GE14).

MCA president, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai who will be defending the Bentong parliamentary seat said the party had been given approval to field its candidates at three parliamentary and eight state seats in Pahang in the GE14.

”MCA has given the opportunity to 10 new and young candidates as the party is confident of their leadership abilities to become a people’s representative, and thus one day, lead the party,” he said.

Liow was speaking to reporters after the announcement of the state BN candidates for GE14 and handover of letters of electoral candidacy by Pahang BN chairman Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob at the Yayasan Pahang Complex here Thursday.

He also hoped that all candidates prepare themselves to enter the ‘PRU14 battleground’ to ensure that BN continued to rule the country.

Meanwhile, MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun who will be contesting the Raub parliamentary seat, said despite contesting in the constituency for the first time, the area was nothing strange to her.

In fact, the former two-term MP for Petaling Jaya Utara said she began her political career in the constituency after joining the Raub MCA Beliawanis and served as private secretary to former Raub MP Datuk Teng Gaik Kwan in 1995.

Chew said she also understood the problems faced by the people in Raub after going to the ground since 2014.

The former women, family and community development deputy minister said she was also confident of recapturing the seat which had about 57,000 voters, with 52 per cent of Malays, 38 per cent (Chinese) and the remainder comprising other ethnic groups.

She was confident that voters in Raub were wise enough to differentiate between the times when the constituency was under DAP and during the previous BN rule.

”There are so many differences because before this (Tan Sri) Ng Yen Yen (former Raub MP and Wanita MCA chief) provided the best service to the people and brought development to the area,” she said.

In the last general election in 2013, DAP’s Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz defeated BN candidate Datuk Hoh Khai Mun with a majority of 2,814 votes. -- Bernama
