KLANG: Barisan Nasional will focus on infrastructure development in the Kapar constituency if it wins in the 14th General Election.
MIC Wanita Chief and BN candidate for Kapar parliamentary seat Datuk Mohana Muniandy Raman said the party is determined to bring positive changes to the area to uplift the socio-economic status of the people.
“The constituency has been in a sorry state for long. The roads are in deplorable conditions, and the people in Kapar lack proper and good facilities and healthcare services.
“Hence, this (infrastructure development) is my priority. If elected, I am going to be the voice of the people. I will champion their issues and help give them a better life.
“I have a good team in Kapar, which comprises Umno, MIC, MCA, Gerakan, MyPPP and Indian Progressive Front (IPF) members who have worked hard for the past three to four years in the constituency.
“They, as well as Kapar BN state seat candidates have given me the spirit to move forward. We are ready as a team to win (in GE14),” she said after filing her nomination papers for the Kapar parliamentary seat at the Klang District and Land Office multipurpose hall here today.
BN candidates who will be contesting at the three state seats are Khairul Anuar Saimun (Meru), Datuk Saroni Judi (Sementa) and Dr Mohd Khairi Hussin (Selat Klang).
On the prospects of contesting in a Malay-majority seat, Mohana said it would not affect her chances. She added that the people are smart to choose a leader who could help resolve their issues.
“I do not see it as a challenge at all because at the end of the day, we are all Malaysians. I do not think people will base their votes on race, but instead on someone who can serve the public best,” she added.
Kapar is a constituency of 124,983 voters, consisting of 70.72 per cent Malays, 14.78 Chinese, 13.55 per cent Indians and 0.58 per cent of other races.
The Kapar Parliament seat will see a four-cornered fight in GE14.
Mohana, 42, will face Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PKR), former Selangor PAS Commissioner and Meru assemblyman Dr Abdul Rani Osman (PAS), and former Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam (Parti Rakyat Malaysia - PRM).
Abdullah Sani said he hopes to work along with his counterparts in PKR to address issues affecting the masses.
On the protest against his candidacy in Kapar, he brushed it off as a small matter. “I do not want to think about the protest, which involves a small number of people. The focus is now on the 124,000 over people in Kapar and the issues they face,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rani claimed that there are already positive changes brought by the PAS leadership after its victories in GE12 and GE13.
“We have done a lot. I leave it to the voters. We are here to serve the people. The public can see for themselves the changes we have done,” he added.
Manikavasagam said he would work towards addressing the rising crime rates in Kapar, as well as tackling youth unemployment.
“There are other issues of public concern in Kapar. One is the non-existence of a district police station (IPD), which I had brought up in 2008 when I was Kapar MP. But there had been no progress thereafter.”
