Hannah Yeoh: PH govt will not play politics, just working to clean up the mess

KUALA LUMPUR: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government would not play politics and not just find faults with the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government, DAP's Segambut Member of Parliament Hannah Yeoh said.

After the new Federal Territories Minister was sworn in, she said PH leaders would start looking into problems affecting Kuala Lumpur folks.

"It's the first time for us so it will be messy. It's cleaning up time.

"It will seem like we're finding faults from the last time (previous government) but it is inevitable because we need to find out the problems.

"We will not be playing politics but we will need to critically look into the problems raised by the people," she told the media after a discussion with Dutamas Raya working committee residents at Taman Segambut here today.

The former Selangor state legislative assembly speaker said, at the moment there were five issues that she wished to address for Kuala Lumpur residents.

The issues were over-development in the city, lack of proper public transportation, flash floods, never-ending traffic congestion and bad road conditions in Kuala Lumpur.

"When there are no proper local plans, the people will be the victims. We will need to look into how many development projects are being carried out and whether it will affect the people," she said.

On a separate matter, the New Straits Times today posted an online poll on its Facebook page for the people to choose who they want as the new Dewan Rakyat speaker, where Yeoh's name was part of the list.

Yeoh was taken by surprise when told of this and said that she would leave the decision to the PH leadership.

"Oh my God, no wonder many people say there were a lot of rumours on this. I think it's best if we let the PH leadership decide on this. I think there are a lot of qualified people for this job," she said.

Also on the list of the NST's online poll were former Perak state assembly speaker V Sivakumar, Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul, Hang Tuah Jaya MP Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin and the eighth Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.

As of 5.45pm today, Yeoh scored 76 per cent from the online poll. The poll will end six days from today.
