Barisan Nasional assemblymen to be a strong opposition

SABAK BERNAM: Barisan Nasional (BN) which is now the opposition bloc in Malaysia must be wise and offer check-and-balance to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

Sungai Air Tawar assemblyman Rizam Ismail said he is confident that all BN state assemblymen are ready to serve as a constructive opposition to the ruling government.

Rizam, who was appointed as the state legislative assembly opposition leader said although BN and Pas assemblymen were the minority in the state assembly, they were willing to act as the check-and-balance for the PH administration.

“BN, as the opposition pact today, wants to do our best to ensure the wellbeing of the people,” he told reporters last night.

Rizam, 37, said the people today were also evaluating whether the government of the day is able to execute any promises made.

He thanked Umno and BN leaders for appointing him and for having the trust in young leaders.

“They (BN leadership) believe the younger generation today should be given the space and room to bring about change.

“Of course, experienced leaders like Tan Sri Noh Omar and Datuk Mohd Shamsudin Lias as well as former Chief Minister Dr Khir Toyo and Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar will be used as references to ensure the opposition functions properly.

“I also look forward to hear new ideas and concerns from the younger generation both in urban and rural areas. I will get to raise any issues (affecting the public) in the state assembly,” he added.

The position of the opposition leader in the Selangor state legislative assembly has been vacant since December 2014, when Sungai Burong assemblyman Mohd Shamsudin resigned from the post due to dissatisfaction with the Selangor Public Accounts Committee.
