KLANG: World leaders have expressed admiration towards Malaysians’ commitment in ensuring a peaceful change of the government, as seen during the 14th general election (GE14).
PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said leaders from England, Turkey, India and Indonesia, among others, have told him that Malaysians had created “history” in effecting change.
“I visited many countries and the leaders said Malaysians created history following their desire to create a change.
“England, Turkey, India and Indonesia said we effected change without bloodbath, fights or people getting killed.
“Recently I met the Indian foreign minister, and he was amazed looking at the people’s unity and happiness (following GE14),” Anwar said in his speech in Bandar Puteri for the Sungai Kandis by-election campaign.
In paying tribute to voters, Anwar said Pakatan Harapan’s victory in GE14 was not solely due to efforts put in place by himself, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad or DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.
“You have contributed immensely to the country, including in Sungai Kandis, for being brave enough to change the government.
“The Malays, Chinese and Indians (among other races) are united to have a corruption-free government.
“People say the (PH’s) victory is thanks to Kit Siang, Anwar or Dr Mahathir. But I would like to congratulate Malaysians for the victory.”
The Sungai Kandis by-election is witnessing a three-cornered contest between PKR’s Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, BN’s Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, and Independent candidate Murthy Krishnasamy.
It is being held after the death of incumbent elected representative Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2.
Polling will take place on Saturday.
