KUALA LUMPUR: Independent candidate for the Port Dickson by-election, Stevie Chan Keng Leong has come out with a 10-point people orientated manifesto.
Among others his pledge’s touch on stagnating income growth, high-cost of living, rising inequality and quality of public education.
In a statement today, he pledged that If elected, he will fight for the general concerns of the Rakyat with the following focus:
- Support Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto and ensure the present administration remains focused in fulfilling its promises;
- Insist the Government sets up a Parliamentary Committee to review and decide on
all-ongoing or upcoming mega-projects;
- Address income inequality issue and fight for the introduction of Capital
Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax and Luxury Goods Tax, which will impact top 10 per cent of
Malaysian households;
-Seek for bottom 20 per cent of Malaysian households to receive a monthly direct cash payment,
conditional upon them fulfilling criteria’s such as school attendance and compulsory
vaccination;
- Propose setting up special advisory panel on Education, Poverty Reduction,
Marginalised Communities (especially Orang Asli), Arts & Culture to guide the
relevant Ministries and make recommendations; and
- Ensure election laws are amended to impose a penalty and investigated by MACC for resignation of Member of Parliament without just cause.
On the specific issues he pledged for Port Dickson, Chan said they are:
- Ensure plans for reliable, affordable and comfortable public transport service linking
Kuala Lumpur to Port Dickson via shuttle bus service;
- Highlight the issue of crime in Port Dickson, particularly petty thefts and burglary,
which is causing problems to local residence;
- Work closely with the local authorities and relevant Ministries to focus on ensuring
cleanliness of Port Dickson as a whole; and
- To relocate to Port Dickson and serve the people there full-time.
“As we have seen, politicians had promised many things but failed to deliver. I agree that some of
the measures are difficult to implement, but as an Independent, it is my task to push my
agenda into a National conversation,” he said in a statement today.
Chan said some of his proposals, such as revamping the taxation system to transfer wealth from the wealthy to the poor, would be in line with the individual values of many Members of Parliament.
He said as such, these causes would be beneficial to all Malaysians and should be supported by politicians in Malaysia Baru.
“I believe this is what the Rakyat voted for on May 9. A new political mindset, one that serves
the Rakyat and not the politicians,” he said.
