Pas will support MCA candidate in Tanjung Piai by-election

KOTA BARU: Pas will support any candidate fielded by Barisan Nasional (BN), including those from the MCA, to contest the Tanjung Piai by-election.

Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said Pas would continue to give its co-operation to BN though both parties had yet to discuss the issue.

"Pas will cooperate with BN on this like what we have done in previous by-elections. Based on the last election, the seat (Tanjung Piai) belonged to BN, so chances of winning are higher (for BN).

"At the moment, I have not received details on the matter but I believe we will win if the votes from Pas and BN are merged," he told reporters after the state exco meeting here today.

Mohd Amar, who is also Kelantan deputy Menteri Besar, was asked to comment on BN’s chances in the upcoming by-election.

The Tanjung Piai seat was vacant after the death of its incumbent, Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik of Pakatan Harapan (PH), last Saturday.

The 42-year-old deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, died at Pontian Hospital from complications stemming from a heart attack.

In the 14th General Election, Dr Farid, who is the Tanjung Piai Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia division deputy chief, wrested the seat from MCA’s Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng with a 524-vote majority.

The total number of registered voters in the Tanjung Piai parliamentary constituency was 53,528. Of that, Malays comprised 56.8 per cent, Chinese 41.64 per cent, Indians 1.01 per cent and others 0.55 per cent.
