KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he is ready to step down anytime as the prime minister.
He said the matter, however, has to be decided among leaders of all parties in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ruling coalition.
“I think this will be decided by all parties (in PH) together, whether they want me to go or otherwise.
"As far as I am concerned, if they (PH Presidential Council) want me to go (step down) now, I can go now,” he told reporters after attending Bank Rakyat Integrity Forum 2020 here today.
Dr Mahathir, who is the PH chairman, was asked to comment on calls by several PKR members of parliament for a firm date on the power transition from him to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
At a forum titled “Should Malaysia wait until November for transition?” in Bangsar last night, the PKR members also proposed for the transition of power between Dr Mahathir and Anwar to take place in May this year.
This, the MPs, contended would allow time for Anwar to carry out reforms under the PH government.
Asked on when he would be announcing the reshuffle in cabinet, Dr Mahathir said the matter is not an easy task.
“Reshuffling (of Cabinet) is not an easy task. This is because it would not only be accepted by me but also the four parties in the coalition,” he said.
Previously on many occasions, Dr Mahathir had hinted on the possibility of reshuffling in the Cabinet.
He had said that the matter would only be decided after studying the achievement and capability of the existing ministers.
