PUTRAJAYA: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail have left the Prime Minister’s Office.
They arrived at Perdana Putra at 9.26am, along with Finance Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
The police here told the press that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had yet to arrive at his office.
Anwar and Wan Azizah are now believed to be on their way to Dr Mahathir’s residence at The Mines.
Several political meetings were held yesterday, fuelling talks of a possible formation of a new political alignment.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) gathered at their headquarters in Petaling Jaya; while PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s camp had their meeting at Sheraton Hotel; and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) at Ritz Carlton.
Umno Supreme Council members also held a special meeting at their headquarters at Menara Dato Onn later in the evening.
Following yesterday’s developments, PKR is set to hold a special central leadership council meeting at 12noon today at its headquarters in Petaling Jaya.
DAP has also called for an emergency meeting today.
Later, at 2pm, Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah will have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Negara.
Meanwhile, Anwar has confirmed speculation that there have been “attempts at betrayal” towards the Pakatan Harapan government.
The defection, he claims, involves Bersatu and several PKR members.
Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa told the press after “Majlis Makan Malam Muafakat MP” last night that the formation of a new government coalition is “very likely”.
Annuar said the announcement of the new coalition will be made by Dr Mahathir.
