Sabah 2020: Early voting kicks off

KOTA KINABALU: Early polling for the Sabah state election started this morning, with 55 polling stations opened for 16,877 early voters.

The figure comprises 7,487 military personnel and 9,390 policemen along with their spouses, who are eligible to vote.

At the Kepayan Police headquarters (IPK), here, the voting process for police officers began at the Officers' Mess at 8am.

The early voting process was also conducted at the army Lok Kawi Camp and the Royal Malaysian Navy Base in Sepanggar.

Throughout the voting process, Election Commission (EC) staff made sure voters complied with standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The SOPs include ensuring physical distancing, use of face masks and hand sanitiser, checking body temperature, and recording attendance.

EC Secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak had earlier said that ballot boxes for early voting will be kept in the police station lockup and counting will be done this Saturday.

Early voting will end at 5pm.
