DAP's Ong Kian Ming not standing in GE15

KUALA LUMPUR: Incumbent Bangi Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Ong Kian Ming announced he will not contest in the 15th General Election (GE15).

He said the decision was not made hurriedly, rather it was discussed since last year.

"I see it as a step to open more doors for other younger leaders in DAP to step up," he tweeted today.

Ong is currently a Selangor DAP Committee member for the 2021-2024 term.

He had also served as the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in 2018.

A second term MP, Ong had been the Serdang federal lawmaker between 2013 and 2018. The Serdang seat was renamed as Bangi in the 14th General Election (GE14).

The former DAP Election Strategist and ex-International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister won the seat by defeating veteran MCA leader Datuk Yap Pian Hon, whereas in 2018 he kept the seat in a three cornered fight.
