KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is expected to hear from the Registry of Societies (RoS) regarding the party's application to amend its constitution by mid-July, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.
The Umno vice-president said according to schedule, the RoS would give its reply to Umno 60 days after the party submitted its application.
"We haven't received the RoS's decision but it usually takes 60 days so I believe the RoS has until July 16," he said after officiating the Malaysian Trades Union Congress 42nd delegates conference here today.
In June last year, Umno was given an 18-month extension after its three-year term ended, which allowed the party to postpone its internal polls. At the time, the Covid-19 outbreak was cited as the reason for the postponement.
The 18-month extension will end on Dec 29 this year and if Umno is successful in its effort to amend the party's constitution to allow internal polls to be held after the next general election, the current leadership would remain in their respective posts.
Umno's Padang Rengas member of parliament, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, however said legally, the current leadership must go for an internal election since their term was over.
Nazri also warned that the party may face dissolution if it didn't take necessary action immediately.
To date, the RoS has yet to announce its decision on Umno's application to amend its party constitution although secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan expressed confidence that the party would get a green light.
