[UPDATED] Zafrul confirms talks with PKR on party membership, no decision made yet

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz today admitted that a discussion was held with PKR concerning party membership.

The Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister, however, said he has yet to make any decision on the matter.

In a post on his Facebook page this evening, Zafrul refuted claims suggesting he was eyeing certain positions at the state level during his discussion with PKR.

"In choosing the suitable political platform to champion the development of the people and the country moving forward, as I have said, I have had discussions with PKR.

"I want to stress that during these discussions, there was no talk of positions at the state level or any by-elections.

"Nevertheless, I have not made any decisions yet. I adhere to the principle that when I make a decision, I will do so with full respect and will officially inform the leadership of my party," he said.

Zafrul said he believed it is the individual's right to choose a political path that aligns with their vision.

"Without compatibility, it is impossible for a person to provide the best service.

"In carrying out my responsibilities and commitment as a member of this government, my political platform is focused on performing tasks effectively for the benefit of the people."

Zafrul also said instead of focusing on political bickering, the main focus should be on formulating and implementing policies for the welfare and well-being of the people.

'What is important is that we focus on policies for the people, based on politics that is constructive rather than destructive," he said.

He also said that he is confident in the vision and aspirations of the unity government, which is formed through strong cooperation and tolerance among several component parties.

"I am a member of a team that is and will continue to implement the best policies for the people.

"This is a government that can accept differing views and opinions among component parties, without disrupting the main objective, which is to guide the country in providing the best for the people."

Earlier today, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that there was a discussion with Zafrul on the possibility of the latter joining PKR.

Anwar added that the discussions were still in the preliminary stages.
